Being that Black Friday is almost upon us, it occurs to me that I have come the realization that the lyrics to the song Santa Claus is Coming to Town, “He’s making a list and checking it twice; gonna find out who’s naughty and nice” aren’t really about Santa at all! They are really for us consumers as we try to figure out how much money we have to spend and on whom to spend it.
This epiphany came to me some time ago, mind you, when the thoughts of whether or not that one person in the office, who can be quite nasty much of the time, should get a $20 gift when there is someone else that you genuinely consider a friend and you can’t afford to buy them the gift you want to buy them.
So now that many stores are opening at midnight on Black Friday – or in the case of Walmart – opening at 10 p.m. on Thanksgiving, this “epiphany” rings even more true. In this economy where we are trying to get the most for our money and reap every bargain available, the stores are making sure they can cash in as much as possible!
Some of you already know that my “second” job is to deliver our local paper every morning. I was talking to the gentleman who delivers the bundles to the church where I pick them up and he was telling me about how out local paper is going to be MUCH larger than last year. He told me how, under normal circumstances, the presses start running at about 1:30 a.m. but because of the massive sales, and the stores opening at midnight (or earlier) that they will start the presses at 11 p.m. on Thanksgiving!
